Free student flights

There is currently a major shortage, nationally and internationally, of commercial pilots. This is affecting all size Aviation Carriers and Aviation Service Providers from small organisations through to the largest,  i.e. Scenic Flight and Tourist Operators, Flying Doctors, Regional Airline Companies, right up to the large Commercial Carriers like Jetstar, TNT Freight, Toll, Qantas etc and our club wants to do something about it!

The Mount Gambier Aero Club is represented through its membership by two Professional Flight Training Schools being Sportsflite based at Naracoorte Airport and providing training at several locations including Mount Gambier Airport and secondly GambiAir which is based at Mount Gambier Airport.

Students aged between 14½ and 17 years old progressing through their senior schooling, and who might consider aviation as a career path, are being given the opportunity to win their introduction to aviation. Twelve winners will meet an experienced instructor, be mentored by other local pilots within the local Mount Gambier Aero Club, and undertake their first “FULLY HANDS ON” Trial Introductory Flight” (TIF). The Mount Gambier Aero Club and flight schools will fully fund these first flights to suitably interested young men and women. Each valued at approximately $220 and distributed between the two flying schools. All TIF’s will take place from the Mount Gambier Airport. In addition. each of our 12 winners will also be gifted 2018-19 financial year Mount Gambier Aero Club Junior Membership, (valued at a further $60) enabling them to join in with Club Activities and receive free mentoring from members, and highly likely free weekend private aircraft rides as a passenger, to help continue that full flying experience!

Interested students living within 50km of Mt Gambier, need to visit us on Facebook or our website, download the Conditions of Application, complete the Application Form and submit this as well as a passport style photo and a 350–400 word, hand-written, letter explaining why they would like to commence learning to fly .  Each application will be examined by the Aero Club Committee and a short list created. (It is likely that “short-listed” applicants will be invited to the Aero Club for an informal chat with our selection committee and from this our winners selected.) Winners will be personally notified and presented with their prizes by mid-September - in time for the better spring/summer flying weather!

There is NO charge for Entry or Application. The Club is just helping to promote Flying Training and expanding career opportunities to local students. Any ongoing training expenses are the responsibility of the student – but get cracking and get a taste as applications must be in by Aug 31st 2018!
